4.2 Recording Videos Within Canvas Studio
Recording On-Screen Content using Canvas Studio
Canvas Studio provides faculty with a simple way to record on-screen content for online courses.
This guide explains how to use the built-in recording feature called Screencast-O-Matic (now known as ScreenPal outside of Canvas, available at https://screenpal.com/ Links to an external site.) to create instructional videos. You'll learn how to set up, record, edit, and upload screen recordings directly within your Canvas courses.
Step 1: Select Screen-Cast-O-Matic
- Navigate to Canvas Studio by selecting the Studio link in your Canvas course navigation menu.
- Open a collection where you would like to save your recording
- Select the Record button to create a new recording.
- Select Screen-Cast-O-Matic from the available options.
Note: If you are using Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, you may notice a Studio Capture option in the dropdown menu. This is a new, integrated screen capture feature currently in beta. While it eliminates the need to download a separate application, we have found the interface to be confusing at this time and cannot recommend it.
For the best user experience, please select Screencast-o-Matic from the available options. If you are interested in experimenting with Studio Capture, refer to the Canvas Community Guide: How do I record a screen capture video in Canvas Studio with a Chrome or Edge browser?

- If you are recording your web browser (e.g., to explain a Canvas assignment), make sure you navigate to the specific page you want to discuss.
