Standards of Academic Progress

Students are in good academic standing when they have a 2.0 grade point average or higher and have completed at least 61% of the units they have attempted. There are two kinds of probation and disqualification, one based upon GPA (Academic Performance) and the other based upon the number of units completed (Progress Performance).  Please view the following table for more information:

Good Academic Standing
Grade Point Average (GPA)
Unit Completion
Maintain a minimum of a 2.0 ("C" Average)
Cumulative GPA
Complete a minimum of 61% of units attempted
(67% for financial aid)

Academic & Progress Probation
Below 2.0 GPA overall
Complete less than 61% of units attempted overall
This is a warning. It is highly recommended to see a counselor to discuss student success strategies.

Academic & Progress Disqualification
Below 2.0 GPA in the previous semester
Complete less than 61% of units attempted in the previous semester

A HOLD is placed on your records to prevent from registering for classes. Meeting with a counselor to sign a Student Academic Contract is required in order to continue taking courses in our district. Any subsequent disqualifications will require sitting out progressively from one semester to a full year.

Students who are not in good academic standing may lose their:

    • Registration Priority
    • California College Promise Grant (CCPG)
    • Financial Aid
    • San Diego Promise

For example:
At the start of the semester, Jimmy enrolls in 12 units.  He later decides to withdraw from 6 units midway through.  At the end of the semester, Jimmy finishes with a 2.0 cumulative GPA, but only has completed 6 units.  Only 50% of units were successfully completed which means that Jimmy will be on Progress Probation and possibly lose his financial aid.

If you are concerned about meeting these academic standards, it is highly recommend that you meet with a counselor to review your options and develop strategies for academic success.
