Step 6: Choose a Hosting Platform & Caption

Using 3C Media Solutions?

If videos are sent out to 3C Media Solutions, once captions are finished you can easily embed captioned videos into your course. Please note: Your local Canvas Admin needs to enable the free Canvas 3C Media Solutions plug-in. This is covered more in detail in the following Quality Captioning Practices Module.

Is YouTube Your Hosting Platform?

Besides 3C Media Solutions, YouTube is used as it allows for free video uploads, basic production edits, seamlessly embeds the video directly into a Canvas page, and most importantly, makes creating captions very easy!

YouTube - Add Captioning

For those who wish to DIY video caption in YouTube, the following are a couple of ways one can add captioning to a new or existing video.

Lucky You - You Have Your Script & Have Less Work To Do!

This is where having a script (preferably in digital form) can save a ton of time! Your script is also known as a "transcript." A transcript is a written version of a video.

Transcribe Away!

If YouTube is used to post the video use the Transcribe and auto-sync feature, Links to an external site. which allows you to copy and paste the text of your script. YouTube will take your script and automatically synchronize it to the video's audio. It may take a couple of minutes to 72 hours to produce your final video.

You will need to review to make sure that captions are accurate. Remember to add-in sound effects or any other non-textual sounds (e.g., [background music], etc.).

Watch the following video to learn how to use the script (now a transcript!) you created, and upload it into YouTube to turn the transcript into captioning:

No Script? Wait for Auto-Generated Captions or Manually Create Captions

Leverage YouTube's Auto-Generated Captioning

While YouTube's auto-generated captions are not sufficient on their own, they can be a starting point for you to edit and correct if you do not have a starting script. Auto-generated captions may take a couple of minutes to 72 hours to appear after uploading a video to YouTube. Factors such as the video length, file size, or YouTube experiencing a lag, that will contribute to the processing time.

If automatic captions are available, they'll automatically publish on the video. Learn how to review, edit, or unpublish automatic captions Links to an external site..

Manually Create Captions

Captions can be manually added into a video. See YouTube's tutorial, Create Subtitles or Closed Captions Links to an external site.. Please note, depending on YouTube familiarity, a 5-minute video may take at least 30 minutes to produce a final video draft with accurate captioning. For this reason, starting with a script or transcript can streamline the captioning process.
