Language Mechanics
Language mechanics incorporate the proper use of spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and other factors deemed necessary for high-quality captioned media. Rules included in these guidelines are primarily those which are unique to captioning and speech-to-text. For conventional words, dictionaries and style guides must be followed. Proper names, technical terms, and specialized language must be verified though specialty references or directly from an authoritative source.
Language Mechanics include:
- Spelling and Capitalization
- Punctuation and Grammar
Auto-Generated YouTube Captioning
Language Mechanics
YouTube's Auto-Generated Captioning can capture and sync much of the dialogue spoken. However, it still needs a person to review for spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar. One may argue that YouTube's latest version of auto-generated captioning creates captions that are, for the most part, readable. However, auto-generated captions do not provide an equal learning environment as it demands additional focus.
Imagine this micro-course on one page without its headings, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar. This course would be a very long run-on sentence. Sure, you might be able to understand it. But how much more time and dedication does it take to get the information you need? Auto-generated captions are a good start - sometimes all it needs is a couple of minor edits!
