Have you created a video, and would like free captioning support? Upload your video to 3C Media Solutions. This is the preferred method of delivery over the 3rd party solutions such as YouTube or Vimeo. 3C Media Solutions is an educational media distribution source for video content provided for all campuses within the California Community Colleges system. The student navigation experience is similar to YouTube or Vimeo.

Have you created a video or found a good instructional video that someone else owns? You can embed any YouTube video with closed captions into your Canvas course. YouTube uses speech recognition technology to automatically create captions for your videos. These automatic captions are generated by machine learning algorithms, so the quality of the captions may vary.

If you own the video, you can easily edit the captions. If the video is owned by someone else, there are several ways to provide closed captioning. The course will further discuss this.

Register for a YouTube Account

  • Register to get a YouTube account.  Links to an external site.
  • Note:
    • When you upload a video, immediately set the language to English. Once you've added English, it may take a couple of minutes to 72 hours before auto-generated closed captioning appears.
    • After the closed captioning auto-generated track is edited (this creates a new track called "English,") immediately delete the old "auto-generated" captions. By default, YouTube will play the unedited auto-generated captioning track.
    • Set closed captions to immediately appear upon playing the video.

Other Video Players

The video players highlighted above are commonly seen in the California Community College system. There may be other video players that are accessible and are also capable of providing an embed link to place videos directly into Canvas. Some publisher videos cannot be embedded into Canvas, and need to be vetted for accessibility as well. Please contact your publisher representative and your Distance Education Coordinator for local accessibility support.
