Practice 1 - Check Accessibility Tool (Hand's On): How Do Your Observations Compare?

How Do Your Observations Compare?

The Check Accessibility tool is a great start to evaluate the accessibility of your content page. However, keep in mind that it is a tool, and will still need your eyes to ensure all the remediation has been addressed. Compare your observations with the answer key below.

Check Accessibility Tool

Canvas Accessibility ActivityThis assignment intended to help you become familiar with Canvas' accessibility checker. When the accessibility checker was engaged, we noticed the following:

  • Headings:  no mention of headings
  • Hyperlinks: no mention of hyperlinks
  • Images: alternative text was needed for all images
  • Lists: no mention of lists
  • Color: color contrast needed to be reviewed for some text

For the accessibility principles that lacked evaluation results, extra attention is needed to ensure headings are present (if needed) and are in logical order, and hyperlinks and lists are correctly formatted. Like with all automated accessibility checkers, they provide good guidelines and can give us a quick summary of accessibility issues, but our pages still need to be reviewed manually to ensure we are creating an effective learning environment. Technology can only help so much.
