Simplifying Complex Syllabus Tables
Microsoft Word Tables
Although Canvas has a built-in Syllabus, providing a downloadable syllabus for your students is a great option too! It is acceptable to leave the document as an accessible Word Doc. If you would like to take a free course about creating accessible Word Documents, please enroll in the Microsoft Word Accessibility Self-Paced Micro-Course. Links to an external site.
Below is an example of a complex syllabus created in Microsoft Word. It has merged cells and multiple rows and columns that could be consolidated. Again, use Canvas' built-in Syllabus if you'd like to provide students with a course overview of all due dates.
This syllabus can be broken down into a simpler table, chunked out by weeks with a header, to help students easily navigate the information. Notice that the items students need to complete are listed in bullets under the week header as some of the following week lacks "call-to-action" items.
Tables in Canvas
Simple tables can be created in Canvas on the "overview page" of a module to help students see the activities for the week at-a-glance. In addition to using Canvas' built-in Syllabus, alternatively, a simple table of weekly activities can be used to help students manage their time. Canvas makes it very easy to create accessible tables.
