Understanding Your Milestones

San Diego Miramar College uses a milestone system to help place students in the right English and Math classes.

Most students get their milestones when they apply to the college or by using the Placement Assistant tool.

Milestone numbers go from 30 to 60—the higher the number, the more advanced the class you’re ready for.

This video will explain English & Math placement and how to view your own milestones via MySDCCD.

English Placement Milestones (R/W)

English placement is based on separate Reading (R) and Writing (W) milestones:

R30/W30

Students must take the English class with extra support, ENGL C1000X.

This class is a college-level English class along with help to build reading and writing skills.

R40/W40

Students are encouraged to take ENGL C1000X, which includes extra support.

But they can also choose to take ENGL C1000 or ENGL 105 without the added support.

R50/W50

Students may register in ENGL C1000 or ENGL 105 without support.

If you have AP English Language & Composition or AP English Literature & Composition scores of 3 or higher, please submit a Proof of Prerequisites/Corequisites Form. This means your ENGL C1000 requirement can be waived.

English for Non-Native Speakers

If English is not your first language, the English Language Acquisition (ELAC) program provides a pathway to college-level English courses.

ELAC classes can help you improve your speaking, reading, and writing skills in English.

ELAC placement is based on the following milestones:

L20

Students may take ELAC 23 and/or ELAC 25

L30

Students may take ELAC 33 and/or ELAC 35

L40

Students may take ELAC 145

After students complete ELAC 145, students may enroll in ENGL C1000 or ENGL 105.

If you are a non-native English speaker and would like to improve your English, take the ELAC assessment, "ELAC GO" to receive your language milestone.

Math Placement Milestones

Math placement is determined by the milestone "M":

M30: Students must enroll in math courses with support

Math classes with support are college-level math classes with extra help built in (courses ending in the letter "X").

Tutoring and support is added to help students to succeed, especially if they didn't take advanced math in high school.

M40/M50: Students may enroll in math classes with or without support

Reasons to consider taking a math class with support:

You haven't taken a math class in a long time
Math is a stressful subject for you

M60: Students may enroll in any math class without support, including MATH 150 (Calculus & Analytic Geometry I)

If you took an AP math exam with a score of 3 or higher, submit a Proof of Prerequisites/Corequisites Form for clearance.

What if I Want to Take a Higher Level Math Course?

Students who want to take a higher-level math class than their milestone allows can take a challenge exam through the Math Department.

How to View Your Milestones

After applying to SDCCD or using the Placement Assistant, students will get an email in 1–2 business days with their placement levels.

These will also be posted in 2–3 business days in the MySDCCD portal under "My Academics" → "View Milestone/Skill Level."
