Welcome to Fact-check: Understanding Misinformation and Disinformation

Maybe you’re already confident in your ability to evaluate information. You’ve learned about source evaluation checklists, but the truth us that some of the strategies you’ve been taught to evaluate information are insufficient, especially in today’s world of online mis-/dis-/information. 

In this module, you will learn about misinformation and disinformation and how it relates to other concepts like fake news. You will also learn a few simple moves to help you quickly evaluate information you find online. By the end of the module, you will be able to move beyond elementary source evaluation tips to fact-check online posts like a pro. 

Student Learning Outcomes 

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to 

  • differentiate between disinformation and misinformation and understand how these concepts relate to other terms such as fake news; 
  • recognize and avoid oversimplified source evaluation strategies; 
  • apply the SIFT method Links to an external site. to evaluating media and information, especially on the web; and 
  • identify fact-checking websites.
