Using Call Numbers
The Miramar College Library uses the Library of Congress call number system to group library materials by subject. Books are physically grouped into areas based on general subjects assigned by the Library of Congress Classification System:

- B Philosophy, Psychology, Religion
- C Auxiliary Sciences of History
- D History: General and Old World
- E-F History: America
- G Geography, Anthropology, Recreation
- H Social Sciences
- J Political Science
- K Law
- L Education
- M Music
- N Fine Arts

- Q Science

Find a Book Using Call Numbers
When you find a book in Library Search, you will see a brief entry with the book’s status, library location, and call number.
If you were looking for a copy of College rules!: How to study, survive, and succeed in college, this is how you would find it.
- The Library Location is Miramar College and it is in the Circulating Collection (Book Stacks).
- Find out where Links to an external site. the Circulating Collection is.
- Start with the letter(s) at the beginning: LB
- After you find the LB section in the library, look for the first number: 2343.32
- After you find that number, look for the letter and decimal number: .N57
- The last number refers to the book’s publication date or copyright year: 2016
- Once you are in the section for LB2343.32 .N57 2016, look at the titles to find your book.
- If you can’t find the book, look around at the titles in that area because it could be misshelved.
Don’t re-shelve any books you remove from the bookshelf! Simply leave the books lying on a nearby table or a cart and we will take care of them. Library staff will make sure the books get put back in the proper place.
