The Kumeyaay Nation at one time lived throughout this region and is currently comprised of 13 reservations scattered across San Diego County and four in northern Baja California. The Kumeyaay people who live on and off these reservations share a heritage that goes back, in their words, "to the beginning of time."

The Kumeyaay Nation at one time lived throughout this region and is currently comprised of 13 reservations scattered across San Diego County and four in northern Baja California. The Kumeyaay people who live on and off these reservations share a heritage that goes back, in their words, "to the beginning of time." This film explores some aspects of this resilient culture including the gathering and preparation of acorns, making of various tools, agave harvesting and roasting. The core this film presents the importance of sharing and maintaining their Kumeyaay cultural heritage and passing it along to future generations. PBS.org
OBJECTIVES:
- Understand the origins and on-going cultural practices of the Kumeyaay
- View the construction and maintenance of Native knowledges as viable and workable alternatives to the ongoing legacy of capitalism and colonialism
- Develop an awareness of contemporary Indigenous issues amongst the Kumeyaay Michigan, the Great Lakes, Indian Country, Turtle Island, and the Fourth World, more generally.
After viewing the video complete the following:
- Write a summary of the Kumeyaay people, what most resonated with you about their history, people, culture.
- What role did natural resources play in their communities? How were these resources used to produce cultural items for daily life or ritual and why was this important for the community past, present and future?
- Describe some of your own personal experiences within the Kumeyaay region - natural resources you've experienced, you may have in your own yard, visits to Kumeyaay cultural sites, etc.
