EQUITY IN THE ACADEMY

Institutions which enhance equity for students often provide life-altering positive opportunities for historically marginalized individuals.  However, historically marginalized employees of these institutions often face significant inequities and discrimination.  This session is intended to encourage Mesa community members to explore how and whether SDMC employees are ironically deprived of equity in an institution that values equity for students.  The Equity and Employees Series this year will focus on Equity for Faculty.  Subsequent years will examine Equity for Classified Professionals, followed by Equity for Administrators.

Objectives:

  • To provide the opportunity for participants to explore scholarly articles, editorials, and videos containing experiences of inequity and discrimination of historically marginalized faculty.
  • To explore opportunities and policies for enhancing faculty equity and mitigating discrimination.

DISCUSSION BOARD

Discussion Questions (view videos below which address some of these issues):

  1. Have you had experiences similar to those shared in the articles/videos in this segment?
  2. Have you asked a faculty from a historically marginalized group about their experiences related to equity at Mesa?
  3. Are there any contrasts from the articles with the experiences of Mesa faculty who belong to historically marginalized groups?
  4. Are there parallels from the articles with the experiences of Mesa faculty who belong to historically marginalized groups?
  5. How might institutional policies and systems at Mesa impact the experiences of SDMC faculty who belong to historically marginalized groups?
