Slide Titles

Slide titles should be unique, when possible, although this is not required. The accessibility benefit to unique slide titles is that for students using assistive technologies, it is easier to determine which slide has focus and how that information relates to the content. By giving every slide a unique title, your students who rely on assistive technology can better navigate your PowerPoint.

This page will cover the following topics:

  1. How Do I View Slide Titles?
  2. How Can I Edit My Slide Titles?
  3. How Do I Title My Slides if the Topic is the Same?
  4. Fix Me PowerPoint Slide Title Activity

How Do I View Slide Titles?

The quickest way to view all slide titles is by clicking on View > Outline View. However, there are two ways to view slide titles. As mentioned, there is the Outline View, and the other way is through the Normal view by clicking on each slide.

How Can I Edit My Slide Titles?

You can edit slide titles by clicking directly into title area in Outline View, or on the slide itself.

In PowerPoint 2016, use Outline View or navigate to each slide to change the slide title.

How Do I Title My Slides if the Topic is the Same?

Sometimes a couple of slides will be on the same topic. However, you can chunk separate subtopics into different slides to help reduce cognitive overload and provide unique slide titles.

For example, if the slide titles are named the same:

  • Reflexes
  • Reflexes
  • Reflexes

Slides have the same title, "Reflexes."

The slides could be retitled as:

  • "Reflex (1)"...or ideally something more descriptive, “Reflex: The Definition.”
  • "Reflex (2)" ...or ideally something more descriptive, “Reflex: Tendon Flex.”
  • "Reflex (3)"...or ideally something more descriptive, “Reflex: Myotatic Reflexes.”
