Built-In Slide Design Theme & Slide Layout

Slide Design Theme

Slide Design Themes are PowerPoints that have a preset collection of colors, fonts, and adequately structured content regions. By choosing a built-in Slide Design Theme, the reading order is accessible by default due to the arrangement of the content regions. This can benefit those who rely on assistive technologies, such as a screen-reader, or those who convert the document into an alternate format.

Slide Layout

Slide Layouts contain formatting, positioning, and placeholders for all of the content that appears on a slide. Placeholders are the containers in layouts that hold content such as text (including body text, bulleted lists, and titles), tables, charts, SmartArt graphics, movies, sounds, pictures, and clip art. Slide layouts also contain the theme (colors, fonts, effects, and the background) of a slide.

Why Should You Choose a Built-In Slide Design Theme or Layout?

This themes and layouts allow a screen reader to interpret the reading order the way you intended. For example, the title of the slide will be read first, and then depending on the slide template, the following text or image will then be read aloud.

If a PowerPoint is created from scratch or manually by adding text boxes, images, and multimedia, the reading order will need to be verified and manually edited for each slide. This can be time-consuming depending on the number of items on each slide and the total number of slides. Using a Slide Design Theme or Slide Layout is an efficient way of creating accessible PowerPoints.
