1️⃣The Ground Level
Our Goal
🎯Engaging students in the learning process can be challenging due to diverse learning needs, distractions of life, busy schedules, and the struggle to meet basic needs. Our goal with this module is to support faculty in integrating a variety of engagement strategies into their teaching practices.
Objectives
Our plan is that by the end of the Engagement Elevator, you'll be able to:
- Identify engagement strategies that can be incorporated into your own teaching methods
- Apply the new engagement strategies in courses that you're currently teaching
- Evaluate and reflect on engagement techniques that you have implemented and make necessary adjustments
Different Floors to Explore
In the book "Equity by Design" the authors Mirko Chardin and Katie Novak remind us, "In reality, there is not one means of engagement that will be optimal for all learners in all contexts; providing multiple options for engagement is essential." (p. 3). Student engagement is a multifaceted concept with various approaches, each offering unique benefits to learners. Since there isn't just one solution that's guaranteed to engage all learners, we'll be giving you several options for you to explore on your own. You'll be deciding which of these floors to explore. (You do not need to explore every floor.)
- Fostering Belonging to Boost Engagement
- Simplify to Engage: Reducing Cognitive Load
- Using Technology to Engage Students
- Active Learning in the On Campus Classroom
- Engaging Assessment Strategies
Elevating Your Practice
After exploring the floors of the Engagement Elevator, you'll be deciding which new engagement strategy to try in your own teaching. You'll be adopting and applying the new technique into your teaching practice and evaluating and reflecting on how it goes. Once we get there, we'll have more details for you on that activity.
