Reflecting on This Semester of Teaching/Service
This activity invites you to take a big-picture look at your teaching/service across the semester. You’ll explore patterns in student engagement and learning, reflect on your own growth, and identify one change you’d like to make moving forward.
This is an opportunity to practice praxis—reflecting, learning, and turning those insights into action. The semester reflection is ideal for the end of the semester, especially if you're wrapping up and looking to earn Flex credit through intentional professional development.

Step 1: Gather Data (45 minutes)
Choose one or more small data sources to guide your reflection:
- Student performance data (grades, assignment submissions, quiz results)
- Participation data (Canvas analytics, discussion activity, attendance)
- Exit tickets, surveys, or student feedback
- Common questions or repeated misunderstandings
- Your own observations from weekly reflections (if applicable)
- Types of questions students frequently asked
- Common points of confusion
- Bottlenecks or challenges in workflow
Make note of any patterns, surprises, or shifts that stand out. You can jot them down.
Step 2: Analyze and Reflect (60 minutes)
Review your data and consider the following:
- What worked well this semester?
- What patterns or challenges showed up in student learning?
- What did students seem to need more of?
- What surprised you?
- What did you learn about yourself as a teacher?
There are no right answers—just honest reflection that helps you grow.
Step 3: Identify One Small Change (30 minutes)
Based on your reflection, choose one thing you would like to change or try next semester. It could be:
- A redesigned assignment or activity
- A change in how or when you provide feedback
- A new way of structuring weeks or modules
- More frequent check-ins or community-building moments
Keep it manageable. Small changes can lead to big results.
Step 4: Record Your Reflection Video (30 minutes)
Record a short imperfect video (1 -2 mins max) responding to the following:
- One insight from the data you reviewed
- One thing that worked well in your teaching this semester
- One small change you plan to make next semester, and why
You can use Canvas Studio, Zoom, your phone, or any recording method you prefer. Upload the video/link to this assignment. Give us your first imperfect take on this video. It is meant to be imperfect and you and not polished or perfectly produced at all.
