Copy from one Canvas course to another

Development & Teaching Shells

At SDCCD there are generally two kinds of Canvas shells:

  • Development shell: a shell to develop/prepare your course (created manually by calling with your request to 1-844-612-7422)
  • Teaching shell: a shell automatically created based on what you are scheduled to teach in the schedule (created automatically via the integration b/w Campus Solutions and Canvas)

District is strongly recommending that faculty develop courses in a development shell instead of the teaching shell. This is due to the fact that some faculty have lost their teaching shells (and therefore all of their course materials) when changes are made to their course sections in Campus Solutions. We don't want this happening to you! 

How to copy from one Canvas course to another?

You'll need to copy from your development shell into your teaching shell before the semester begins. Here are the steps for copying content from your development shell into your teaching shell. It is the same for copying content between any two shells on the same SDCCD Canvas server:

In the video below you'll see how to copy specific pieces of one Canvas course into another one. As you''ll see in the video, you have the option of copying an entire course or copying only specific pieces. You'll select the radio button next to All Content or Select specific content. 

  • All Content: If you want to copy the entire course.
  • Select specific content: If you want to select the specific things to copy
