1. Record

Keeping it Simple

We don't want to overwhelm you with all of the possible video options and tools. Below you'll find three free and simple workflow options available to you.

⭐Canvas Studio is now available to us! [August 2020]. Canvas Studio is an excellent option for folks who are new to video recording!

Canvas Studio is now available!

As of August 2020 we now have access to Canvas Studio to record videos directly inside Canvas! And it's available to our students too! Canvas Studio allows you to record webcam videos and screencast videos. Here are some resources to help you get started with Canvas Studio.

Option 1 | Recording in Zoom

You have likely used Zoom before for online meetings. Zoom lets us record the audio and video of our meetings, but you don't have to be meeting to hit record. You can login to your Zoom room, enable your video, and hit the record button. Zoom will let you share your screen, making it another option for screencast videos. That recording can get uploaded to YouTube to be captioned and shared with your students. Here is a video of Katie taking you through entire process of Record, Publish, Caption, and Share, if you decide to record using Zoom.

Option 2| Recording on your Smartphone

We aren't limited to recording in front of our computers. A smartphone allows us to be more mobile with our recordings. Recording from our phone means that we've already got the built-in camera and microphone in our pocket wherever we go, and with the YouTube app installed on our phone we can easily share to our YouTube channel.  How to? Open your phone camera, and switch to video and hit record. We don't have a how-to video on this step, but our next page will show you how to get the video from your phone to YouTube.

Option 3 | Screencastomatic

Screencastomatic is a free screencasting tool that lets you record your webcam, your screen, or both. With Screencastomatic you get a bit more flexibility than you do with a Zoom recording. For example, you can move the webcam picture-in-picture while you're recording. You can move the recording area while you're recording. Here's a video of me recording my slide presentation using Screencastomatic. I also show you how to paste the YouTube link into a Canvas Discussion.

Time to Record!

Stop here and decide what you're going to record and using which of the options above. Then go give it a try. We know it is scary the first time. That's okay. You'll be fine.
