Why Videos? (Please Edit Me✏️)
Before we get into Canvas Studio, let's take a quick step back to discuss why we think instructional videos are so important for our students in the first place.
Instructional Video as an Equitable Teaching Tool
Integrating instructional videos into our teaching toolkit is essential, given how videos are such a big part of our students' lives. Using videos improves learning because we're presenting information through multiple modalities, aligning with the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. Videos offer a dynamic way to convey complex concepts, enhance engagement, and support a broader understanding. By embracing instructional videos, we're tapping into a more inclusive and impactful way to meet our students where they are.
Equitable considerations of video
- Students can pause/stop/start/replay the video as much as they need to in order to best understand the information
- Captioned videos can help our English language learners better capture what was said
- For fully online courses, videos help to humanize the instructor which allows learners to feel comfortable reaching out for support when they need it.
- Videos can provide flexible access to content for our students who are working, parenting, or have other scheduling conflicts that prevent them from attending live sessions.
- When students get to co-create course content videos, they learn that their voice matters and that they have expertise to share with others.
